Georgy Girl
The Seekers
single (1966)
——————————————————

I had no idea this was the title track for a movie until I just Wiki’d the song, but after checking out the film’s Wiki page and reading the plot, I want to see it. It sounds kind of nuts. And depressing. Also really gross.

OMG BETH WATCH IT.  We’ll have a lengthy discussion about it.  I think some of the gross parts are meant to be satire but it’s British and you know, I don’t care what anyone says, you can’t 100 percent understand British humor unless you are actually British.  But it’s definitely interesting and I really did have a lot to think about after I watched it.

OMG YOU’VE SEEN IT. Have you read the Wiki summary of the plot? It makes it sound pretty effing awful. Or I mean, it makes Georgy sound really effing awful. And the ending sounds depressing as hell for everyone involved. But OMG it makes me feel better knowing that it’s intended to be comedic or satirical (it’s not stated on Wiki, and from the description I assumed it was just a really awful drama!).

OMG YES I WAS TRAUMATISED FOR DAYS.  Look, I was so traumatized I just used the English spelling.

Yeah, I’ve read the Wiki description and, uh, well, Georgy is awful.  I mean EVERYONE’S awful in it, I think that’s the point more or less.  I wonder if I could find the novel anywhere, I’d be curious to read it.  Anyway, yeah, I feel that the theme of the movie is that people are selfish and no matter how much they pretend, ultimately they only care about getting what they want.  There are some great performances in it.  Charlotte Rampling (who is so freaking beautiful here) is horrible, really, and yet I couldn’t help but like her anyway.  Alan Bates (also beautiful) does a great job at Jos.  He’s a selfish slacker and I don’t think he ever really loves Georgy, he just loves the devotion he sees in her eyes at the start and it feeds his ego.  But he’s charming for a while.  And Georgy, wow, what an interesting character and Lynn Redgrave is AMAZING in the role.  I do think you would find it interesting.

The lyrics for Georgy Girl were written by Jim Dale, who narrated the Harry Potter audiobooks!

“He tends to be arrogant about his accomplishments and dismissive of those who, in his estimation, fall short. He does not regard disparities in circumstances as relevant. Anyone who falls short of his achievements must be insufficiently smart or not a hard worker, and perhaps suffers from some moral debility as well. Thus it doesn’t matter if you’re operating within the context of a small, empty city or a big, crowded one. It doesn’t matter if you are, say, the son of a wealthy corporate titan who became a prominent governor, or the son of a single mother who lives in public housing. Romney earned $250 million and has a dressage horse competing in the Olympics, and, therefore, you can too.” —

Eugene Robinson, describing what he has observed of Romney, in Romney stumbles through his world tour (via bohemiansouth)

Via thetart:

You know what kills me about this? This is also true of every Conservative I know, but with very few exceptions Romney would apply this same dismissive logic to their opinions! How do you follow a guy who believes that his daddy’s money makes him smarter than you with no more evidence than a glance at the truck you drive or the Target brand polo shirt you’re wearing? I do not understand people who have such respect for a person who boasts shameless, unvarnished disrespect for them in return.

This is not a Christian orientation to the world.  It has nothing of christlike love or sacrifice, only arrogance, power-lust, and greed.  What God calls Christians to is not to dismiss or ignore those who live in public housing or who lack horses to run in the Olympics; rather, we are called to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and welcome the homeless.

Mister Romney, Undercover Nun is praying for your immortal soul.

“Some part of all of us wants to be credited and enjoys the acclaim. And a big part of all of us likes getting answers. But we now live in a world where counter-intuitive bullshitting is valorized, where the pose of argument is more important than the actual pursuit of truth, where clever answers take precedence over profound questions. We have no patience for mystery. We want the deciphering of gods. We want oracles. And we want all of it right now.” —

Ta-Nehisi Coates on journalism, Jonah Lehrer, and the truth. (via theatlantic)

I like Coates a lot and usually agree with him. And I agree with him in the main here. But whenever someone starts out with “we now live in a world” and they’re not talking about technology, I get antsy.

Guess what - the world has always been this way. Look at Diogenes. I mean, come on. People didn’t just start getting ruder, or dumber, more dishonest, or more vulgar - it’s just that when we’re younger we don’t see it, and once we start looking outside ourselves we see these things and think they’re new.

I’m a born and bred Anglophile and I’m actually pretty disgusting about it. I do try not to inflict it on everyone. I hate the Olympics though, so you’re safe from me.

The funny thing is I don’t…

I think most sports are as boring as a brick in the sun. I heart the Queen though, sorry!
